Abstract

In February 2009, the LISS panel completed a questionnaire about biomedical research. This measure concerns the part of the survey conducted by telephone.

This survey serves two purposes. On the one hand, it is a mixed-mode experiment, in which the results of telephone interviews (CATI) are compared to those of an Internet questionnaire. In addition, three experiments have been incorporated in the questionnaire. The first questionnaire concerns the effect of the order in which response options are presented, from low to high or vice versa. The second experiment investigates the effect of whether or not response categories are folded out. Finally, experiment 3 aims to inventory to what extent offering a ‘don’t know’ option affects the answers given.

For this part of the research, 2000 panel members were selected, of which 1207 completed the telephone interview (response percentage 60.3%).
